One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the board at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate following their development".

The former Harvard president, who once headed the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The recently released emails revealed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the AI firm expressed it accepted the economist's choice to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," OpenAI remarked.

Political Context

This development arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on recently to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its records on the case.

The measure will afterward move to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he expects to sign the legislation, after changing his stance on the issue following pressure from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-connected emails released by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced several well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.

The messages revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to introduce Summers to prominent international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the emails were released with the wider community, the former official stated he accepted "full responsibility for my poor decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the people closest to me".

Career Background

The economist held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would persist with his educational duties.

Following his declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in Washington where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was not associated with the group.
